For three years we asked God to fix this problem. I'm writing today to tell y'all that our Almighty Wonderful Counselor and Great Healer has started fixing it. He delights in "sending help from the sanctuary," (Psalms) to those who call on His name. And we've been a-calling, let me tell you.
We began to despair of His ever making it better but we kept praying, kept taking our daughter to different doctors, kept trying new things, kept praying some more. It's not that we are obsessed over appearance around here. But her excessive weight gain was sounding an alarm to us that something was very wrong with her health. I'm not suggesting that everything I'm about to tell you will fix anyone's problems. I'm only telling you the answer God specifically has given us.
My daughter fell into a category of people whose thyroid levels appear normal when tested. Her numbers were what is defined by conventional medicine as being within normal range. And so an endocrinologist is not able to help someone like her, because he simply doesn't know how.
Wilson's syndrome protocol has been God's answer for our daughter. A smartie pants fellow named Dr. Wilson figured out how to treat someone who is being told her thyroid numbers are perfectly normal, but that person has all the symptoms of low thyroid. This is important to treat, not just for weight but because the symptoms gradually multiply and become increasingly serious and debilitating. A low thyroid greatly lowers one's quality of life. Our daughter's weight gain and digestive issues, if untreated, could have led to infertility, depression, diabetes, migraine headaches and other stuff you just really do not want for your child or yourself.
Basically the way it works is you find a local doctor who understands Wilson's syndrome and can prescribe his specific T-3 medication for you. This is not just any T-3, it's the Wilson's T-3. His plan is not just popping a pill, you have to do stuff. You take your pulse each morning, and if that is within a certain normal range, you take the T-3 medication twice a day at exactly 12 hour intervals. You also take your temperature three times a day and get the average of that. Your dosage of medication is based on that average temperature, gradually building up to a maximum dose, then tapering back down eventually to nothing.
Our guy Wilson discovered that if your body temperature is consistently at or below 97.8, and you have symptoms of low thyroid, then you are looking at some low thyroid. No matter what a thyroid specialist might tell you. Once you can sustain 98.6 or so, then you're golden. Other doctors measure thyroid differently but Wilson's world is based on the temperature.
His plan pretty much jump starts your thyroid. It resets that gland through his medication and essentially psyches out your body so that you begin to be able to sustain a temperature of 98.6 consistently. Once you can do this, it means your body is producing a normal level of the thyroid gland's hormones that it wasn't producing before, and so you don't need the medication anymore. You start tapering off the medication and you're done.
You don't have to take the medication forever. It fixes your thyroid and then boom you're finished. This is different because with most other thyroid treatments, it's a lifelong thing and you are dependent on the medication. This guy actually does something about your thyroid. The thyroid gland actually begins to function normally on its own.
We are about two months into the treatment. It can take several months for it to work. We're okay with that; after all, it's been three years. Already we are seeing rapid improvement. She looks like her old self again. She still has some of the "feeling bad" symptoms so far, but child she looks very healthy. So we know it is working.

Apparently the longer someone has been suffering from low thyroid, the longer the treatment takes to work, and that makes sense. If someone has been putting up with a low thyroid for 20 years it might take a long time for this thing to kick in. There are some side effects too, which come and go for everyone differently. Our daughter has a fever sometimes and has to lie down.
In addition to all that exciting Wilson-ness, our daughter also began a gluten and dairy-free diet a while back and this seems to have something to do with low thyroid as well. It is possible that the Wilson's thingie could ultimately fix that too. We don't know yet. I think it is very hard to be gluten/dairy free because America is set up for foods that contain those things but my daughter's been a real trooper. Me not so much. When we first started the no gluten/dairy for her, I'd walk in my kitchen, stand there for a second, and walk back out again. "There's nothing I can cook."
We eventually adjusted. As far as avoiding gluten and dairy go, if you want to get philosophical -- which I'm always up for -- I can see it both ways.
Gluten: Those people who made up that nutrition pyramid put grains as the foundational basis for a healthy diet and yet, um, think about the things that contribute to weight gain. A lot of delicious bread, cakes, muffins, cookies, pasta, all of those things are not exactly associated with being a size 4. Just saying. On the other hand, the Bible talks about Joseph storing grain to save the Israelites during a seven year famine. And at one point God told someone to sprinkle a little grain on a rotten pot of gruel and that freshened it up completely and made it safe to eat. The book of Ezekiel mentions several specific gluten-high grains that God said to eat to stay alive during a fasting period. So I don't really know what's going on with the gluten situation but if it makes my daughter feel better to avoid it, then all right.
Dairy: Sometimes I'm a little slow but it did dawn on me one day as I looked out the car window and saw some cows grazing in a field that, hmm, perhaps if people drink their milk then we as a population will start to look and act like them. It's a possibility. Cows, we can all agree, are not known for being energetic and thin. But the Bible talks many times about the promised land's being a glorious place "flowing with milk and honey," and Abraham did some stuff with "butter and milk." in Genesis 18. They're sometimes talking about goats but not always because in 1 Samuel 6:10 we have a specific reference to cow's milk ("milch kine").
So God must be cool with dairy, or at least at one time dairy was digestible by people. I do know it helps my weight to avoid ice cream. The only way I can have the self-control to give up ice cream is that I traded it in for dark chocolate chips a while back. I pretend that I do not see the ice cream in my freezer, and therefore it cannot harm me.
So, through the Wilson's protocol, plus zapping gluten and dairy, we are seeing God give us some serious victory over weight right now in our family with not letting an underfunctioning thyroid take over permanently. We are so thankful God put in our path someone who can treat our daughter when other doctors would tell you that her thyroid is perfectly normal. While we know durn-tootin' that it's not.
I'm not giving up on helping my child if that means we search and pray six more years. Sixty more years, if I live that long. Whatever it takes. But thankfully, it seems that, as my husband said to me this morning: "We kept on looking into it, and now God has given us the answer."
