“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother, for they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.” I think it means like a lovely necklace, rather than, um, mean chains. Proverb 1:7-9
“But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet (or, “be at ease”) from fear of evil.” Proverb 1:33 “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverb 3:5 “Let thy fountain be blessed; and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.” Proverb 5:18 “I love them that love me, and those that seek me early (or, “diligently”) shall find me… for whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the Lord.” Proverb 8:17 “Hatred stirreth up strife: but love covereth all sins.” Proverb 10:12 “When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.” Proverb 11:2 “A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband.” Proverb 12:4 “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord; but they that deal truly are his delight.” Proverb 12:22 “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” Proverb 13:20 “He that spareth his rod hateth his son, but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.” Proverb 13:24 So we've heard "spare the rod, spoil the child," and that is not from scripture. But what it does say in scripture, is "spare the rod, hateth his son." “A soft answer turneth away wrath, but grievous words stir up anger.” Proverb 15:1 “Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.” Proverb 15:17 “Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established.” Proverb 16:3 “When a man’s ways please the Lord, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.” Proverb 16:7 “Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.” Proverb 16:24 “Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.” Proverb 17:6 “The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water; therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.” Proverb 17:14 |
“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.” Proverb 17:22
“He that hath knowledge spareth his words.” Proverb 17:27 “The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” Prov. 18:10 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Prov. 18:21 “The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.” Prov. 19:11 “It is an honor for a man to cease from strife, but every fool will be meddling.” Prov. 20:3 “Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.” Prov. 20:11 “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Prov 22:6 “He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity; and the rod of his anger shall fail.” Prov 22:8 “Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.” Prov. 22:15 And then there’s some more stuff about not withholding correction from the child. “Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself; and discover not a secret to another.” Prov 25:9 “If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward thee.” Prov. 25:21-22 All righty! Nice feel-good, warm & fuzzy passages there. The Bible is really something. “A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.” Proverbs 29:11 “The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.” Proverb 29:15 “Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.” Prov. 29:17 “Every word of God is pure: he is a shield to them that put their trust in him.” Prov 30:5 “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies….Strength and honor are her clothing: and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom: and in her tongue is the law of kindness.” Proverbs 31:10, 25-26 |
