James 1
“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations: knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.” That patience can also be thought of as “endurance” or “steadfastness.” James 1:3
The rough junk that God allows in our life is actually the good stuff. It’s what makes us patient.
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him.” James 1:5
Sometimes we think we have to figure challenging situations out. We just really don’t. God just told us that He will give us wisdom whenever we ask Him.
“Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” James 1:15
“Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.” James 1:19
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” James 1:22
“If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.” James 1:26
As in worthless.
James 2
“…so faith without works is dead also.” James 2:26
It’s kinda like, if you watch a cooking show, and then say, “Oh man that was awesome. What’s for dinner?” And then go pick up some fast food. We can’t just have the belief in our hearts, we have to get up off our you know what and ask God how He wants us to put that faith into action.
James 3
“And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity.” James 3:6
“But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” James 3:17
James 4
“Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” James 4:3
“Got resisteth the proud,” James 4:6
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7
“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. Speak not evil of one another.” James 4:10-11
James 5
“Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.” James 5:17-18.
This is telling me two things. At least two. Prayer works. And also, James knew the scriptures. He’s quoting the Old Testament.
