1 Samuel 7
“Prepare your hearts unto the Lord, and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.” 1 Sam 7:3 1 Samuel 12 “For the Lord will not forsake his people for his great name’s sake, because it hath pleased the Lord to make you his people.” 1 Sam 12:22 “Only fear the Lord, and serve him in truth with all your heart; for consider how great things he hath done for you.” 1 Sam 12:24 1 Samuel 14 This is Saul’s son Jonathan before defeating a bunch of bad guys that everyone else was too scared to fight: “It may be that the Lord will work for us: for there is no restraint to the Lord.” (another translation: “nothing can hinder the Lord.”) 1 Samuel 14:6 1 Samuel 15 Samuel the prophet dude rebuking king Saul for disobeying God, and I’m pretty sure Jesus quoted this passage later in the NT: “And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king.” 1 Sam 15:22-23 1 Samuel 16 When anointing king David who was a young ruddy fellow, God said this to Samuel, who was confused thinking God would’ve planned for one of the older buff sons of Jesse to be king: “But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature, because I have refused him; for the Lord seeth not as man seeth, for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” 1 Sam 16:7 After that, the “spirit of the Lord came upon David,” but “the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul.” Next time David finna woop up on Goliath. “Then said David to the Philistine, ‘Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield, but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts; the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou has defied.’” 1 Sam 17:45 |
1 Samuel 17
And Goliath in his big ol’ soldier metal outfit’s like, Am I a dog? Here you are coming at me with sticks and a couple little rocks. And then David talks some other junk to him and is all: right now today I’m fixing to kill you man, me this little dude and you think you’re all bad with your big armor outfit, so that after I do this, everyone will know about God. And more talk of carcases. David says: “And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord’s.” 1 Sam 17:47 We’ve heard the story a million times but it is always a comfort to see how David saw this great big scary giant that no one could approach or even consider defeating, but David didn’t focus on the giant, he looked past the giant and saw only his much greater God. So whatever our circumstances are that seem impossible or too big for us, God is bigger than that and greater than that and stronger than that. 1 Samuel 25 Some other smatterings of randomness about David: Abigail’s husband Nabal who did David and his men really wrong, was so grumpy, “such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.” 1 Sam 25:17 But Abigail was wise and cool, and came out to meet David to make up for Nabal’s offenses: “And David said to Abigail, blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me.” 1 Sam 25:32 1 Samuel 30 Then when the bad guys (Amalekites I think) had burned the city and taken their wives and children captive while David and the army were away, “David was greatly distressed, for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.” 1 Sam 30:6 |
